| | Dear Tourism Officials,
After viewing your site, I really would have liked to include a visit to your city on my tour.
It looks to be a beautiful city with so much history & culture.
So why I am saying "Not Belgrade" ?
One reason .. Belgrade Zoo.
I was appalled to see the archaic cages and conditions that the animals are confined in. There is a similar set of cages in my local Zoo .. they're in the Museum section & are used to demonstrate how ignorant of animal behavior zoological gardens were 100 years ago.
So unfortunately I will not be visiting Belgrade, & I hope that other potential visitors take the same action until such time as the Belgrade Zoo issue is addressed.
If there are any immediate plans to demolish / improve the zoo, I would be glad to hear of them.
Regards

Letter to Belgrade Tourism office:
Gentlemen,
My family and I had been planning an extended visit to Belgrade to visit friends, and to tour their lovely city. Unfortunately, we have had to cancel our plans indefinitely because of news we heard concerning the Belgrade City Zoo.
Photographs of the animals and zoo grounds confirm the neglect and abuse that has obviously been going on for years. The animals in this zoo live in bare enclosures, and show obvious signs of distress and illness. How can visitors stroll along the beautifully groomed walkways and look upon such misery? If these animals are to be in captivity, they deserve to be in enclosures that reflect their natural environment, and to be with others of their species. The operation of the Belgrade City Zoo must be investigated, and steps taken to provide proper care of the animals. If there are insufficient funds or resources to make the necessary changes, the zoo should be closed and the animals sent to sanctuaries.
The type of cruelty evidenced in the Belgrade City Zoo has caused me to question the merits of your country, and so my family and I will not be visiting Serbia as planned. I also will advise my friends and associates to boycott Serbia until the zoo has been investigated, and improvements made.
It is unfortunate that a country so rich in culture, beauty, and history, is also a party to such a disgraceful situation. I sincerely hope that changes will be made so that I may visit my friends, and the city we have heard so much about.
Respectfully,
